Reading Circles and Direct Instruction Reading
Our wonderful reading comprehension program will be up and running soon—this year in the afternoons from 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. Would you like to help us with this important work?
Reading Program Update
Our goal at Casa Esperanza is always to nurture a true joy for reading in every student. This summer, the Casa faculty completed extra training to make your child’s experience of literature better than ever in both English and Spanish.
Our wonderful reading program will be up and running soon—this year in the afternoons from 2:00 – 2:45 p.m. Would you like to help us with this important work? Leila Wheless, Casa’s Language Arts Coordinator, will teach parents how to lead reading circles on Monday, August 2 from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. (with coffee and snacks!). An alternate training will take place from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m., also on Monday, August 2. No experience or special skill is necessary. Ms. Wheless will show you what you need to do. And if you have done this critical work before, please come to the training to share your experiences and refresh your memory.
Also stay tuned for a Reading Mastery (“direct instruction”) update. Students who need more introductory decoding work will participate in special reading groups where phonics are the focus. If your child is placed into a direct instruction group, we will notify you by Monday, August 2 so that you can attend a parents’ information reading on Thursday, August 5 (from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. or alternately from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m.). Childcare will be provided for a fee at the evening session.
We want all students to be joyful, confident, and capable readers. If you would like more information on how to help your child love to read, feel free to contact Leila Wheless at lwheless@cemcs.org.
